Artist Statement

My work investigates the physicality of the immaterial. Space, light, sound, and time are often considered immaterial because they are unseen and we have limited knowledge about how to manipulate them. However, as we better understand and are able to manipulate intangibles, the more we can mold and shape them to our needs, like a sculptor manipulating clay. Transient materials are powerful media the artist can use to describe the invisible and intangible qualities of the spiritual and inapprehensible.
Like glass, outer space is a vehicle for light. I use glass because its transparency embodies light and space. Glass represents the physicality of the immaterial. My processes are hidden and seemingly simple. Just as the immaterial is invisible and seems simple, art should appear simple in execution.
The experiential aspect of installation work has a profound influence on my perspective of the world. My work is more experiential than object oriented. I am more interested in having viewers experience an event than look at an object. Perhaps like me, they will be changed by it. Through my work, I am searching for greater understanding of how ideas about the universe change our perspective of it.
Understanding the corporeal qualities of the incorporeal helps me feel that I am closer to comprehending the mechanisms and meaning of the universe.
